This is SDA Architects

How can we ensure our designs are as functional, simple, elegant, sustainable and fun, for its users? That's what we ask ourselves each day. That's why you're here, reading this self-aggrandising drivel.

Holy $h!t. Fun architecture?!

Anthony agreed. So much of hiring an Architect is intimidating, complicated and confusing. He wondered if it could all be a LOT simpler. Less stressful. If it could give people confidence, rather than strip them of it (and their cash.) Holy $h!t, it could even be FUN! Why shouldn't designing your project be fun? After all, you're gonna do it anyway. May as well enjoy it.

Rather than be influenced by what's trending on Instagram and Pinterest, we consider how the spaces in your house will work now and in the future. As a 4th Generation Stonemason, I’ve developed a unique connection to the raw form of local building materials and their inherent connection to human experience. We propose materials and finishes that suit your style and the budget and won’t be a headache to keep clean. We don’t over complicate things. We don’t have big egos. We don’t get attached to our ideas. And rather, take calculated risks – so you can maximise your opportunities.

Architecture is not about finding a compromise between the pragmatic and aesthetic. It is finding a response that fulfils a practical need, whilst maintaining an inherent elegance and beauty.

Developing a sound understanding of our clients’ needs and expectations underpins our approach at SDA, however I believe the best solution is not always the obvious one. Sometimes it is necessary to think outside the box, explore possibilities, and push boundaries and expectations to achieve the best possible outcome. By engaging and communicating with our client, the design process becomes a shared experience.

You’ll often find me buried under a mountain of yellow trace and diagrams, soft Jazz music in the background; layering, drawing and testing spatial arrangements. Architecture is like writing. You often have to edit it over and over so it looks effortless.

The elements that distinguish architecture from other built structures are (1) the suitability of the work to use by humans and the malleability of it to human activities, (2) the solidity and longevity of the project’s construction, and (3) the communication of understanding and concepts through its aesthetic. All these conditions must be met in architecture.
